This immense work, which was issued in 35 parts, is considered by many to be one of Gould's greatest achievements and was the lengthiest project he undertook. The number of species represented was quite phenomenal as was the variety of habitats. The territories covered ranged from Palestine East to Japan and then as far South as the Moluccas and everything Westward!! The project was to take 34 years and outlive Gould. The final three parts were completed by William Hart who lithographed the plates after Gould's sketches while Richard Bowdler Sharpe was responsible for the final descriptive passages. There were a total of 530 hand-colored folio prints depicting everything from Spectacular Pheasants to Parrakeets to Sunbirds, Trogons, Pittas, Sparrows and Buntings!! The artists and lithographers responsible were Gould, H.C. Richter, Josef Wolf, and William Hart with the printing done by Hullmandel & Walton, Walter, or Walter & Cohn.
