EDWARD E. HODGSON

British (active 1840-1881)

EDWARD E. HODGSON was most certainly one of the talented members of the Hodgson family of painters.  He was the owner of an album of watercolors which I have obtained with most of the entries being in his hand.  The first watercolor in the album was inscribed, "'The Sisters' Clapham Common, my birth place", so we know that he was originally born in London.  He moved at a later date, probably in the 1860's, to the North of England where he came in contact with another elusive artist, Miss Jessey Joy.  Miss Joy lived in the Richmond area of North Yorkshire during this time period and they appear to have gone on a excursion together to paint Richmond and Easby Abbey, both of which were favourite subjects of hers.  Hodgson went on several tours to the Continent, with the first being Italy in 1866, then France and Switzerland in 1877-78.  He also painted in the Lake District and Cornwall.  The history of the Hodgson family is still an on-going research project of mine, which will have to be up-dated as I locate more information in England.  At this point, I still do not have his birthdate, but many other questions have been answered.  I believe he may be related to the well-known artist and drawing master, Edward Hodgson (1719-1794), who emigrated from Ireland to England and settled in London exhibiting at the Royal Academy and becoming the treasurer of the Associated Artists in Watercolour.  The daughter of this Edward Hodgson was also an artist so it would not be too-farfetched to conjecture that Edward E. was his Grandson. There is also an Edward Hodgson mentioned in Artists Biographies who worked in the north of England from Birmingham to Northumberland during the years 1849-1881 and so this would definitely be our artist!

Please note:  I have just received a huge collection of topographical watercolors by Edward Hodgson, so please check back towards the end of the month for scenes from most countries of Europe including Grindelwald, Villiers, Davos, Malta, England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, and a host of others!!  Also please check our eBay sales beginning on September 12th.

This is a really pretty watercolor of the town of Richmond, North Yorkshire looking towards the town along the river from Easby Abbey.  Richmond is the capital of Swaledale, and is situated on the Swale river.  It is a very picturesque town with numerous Georgian houses and the magnificent Norman castle built by a trusted supporter of William I, Alan the Red of Brittany.  I believe the castle is just around the bend and out of the artist's view.  As you can imagine, it is steeped in history!!  This is Pencil and Watercolor on Paper and is sized 7 x 10 inches.  In fine condition with remnants of old album page on the reverse and very lightly toned.  Inscribed, signed and dated.

This is a beautiful view of, as it is entitled, "Lake Geneva from the Steamer"!!  There are almost too many colors in this for the digital camera as the little village really stands out in the corner as do the tiny wisps of gouache on the peaks to highlight the snow.  A really stunning watercolor with the reflections on the water giving some serene movement to the composition.  The title is in pencil on the lower left of the watercolor and in pen on the album page.  This is also on blue paper and is Pencil and Watercolor heightened with Gouache on Paper sized 7 x 9 7/8 inches.  In fine condition with some remnants of the old album page on the reverse.
