A Monograph of the Ramphastidę,

or Family of Toucans

This publication represented John Gould's first monograph of a Bird Family and is generally considered to be one of his "Most Lovely Works".  There were 33 finely hand-colored plates in this first edition of 1833-35 with eight completed by Edward Lear.  When the second, expanded edition was issued in 1852-1854, all of the plates were re-done by Gould and Richter so these first edition illustrations were the only ones by Lear.  They are both truly outstanding works and among the finest Lear ever did for Gould.
